On 28 August, 2009 a seminar entitled ‘Ethics and Security’ was organised by the Public Administration Department of the VU University, the Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice of Avans Hogeschool and the integrated programme INEX (WP3).The seminar was held at the VU University in Amsterdam. The main aim of the seminar was to bring together researchers from various parts of the world who are involved in ethics and security questions. The seminar was attended by several scholars, as well as practitioners in the field of security.Speakers in the first part of the seminar included Seumas Miller, Professor of Philosophy at Charles Sturt University and the Australian National University, who gave a presentation about police ethics and current challenges in a changing security context. Further, Asbjørn Rachlew, Detective Superintendent Oslo police district and University of Oslo gave a presentation about the ethics of investigative interviewing in accordance with European Guidelines.
The second part of the seminar included presentations by Peter Burgess, Research Professor at PRIO on the ethical subject of security, as well as Desiree Verweij, Professor of Military Ethics at the Netherlands Defence Academy and Radboud University Nijmegen on ethics, integrity and moral professionalisation in a changing military environment.
Reflections were given by dr. Emile Kolthoff, Chair Public Safety and Law at Avans University of Applied Sciences in Den Bosch, The Netherlands and Leo Huberts, Professor of Public Administration at VU University Amsterdam. Prof. dr. Monica den Boer chaired the event.
The next event organised by WP3 will be a workshop which is scheduled to be held on 14-15 April 2010 at the VU University Amsterdam.
